He had an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure jazz, funk, and soul, and, as a talented drummer in his own right, he brought a rare sense of groove to the samples he chopped up on his trusty Akai MPC.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDonuts began simply enough - an idea to turn a good demo tape into a full-length album. It would end up being one of the defining works of Dilla's life.
